Continuing Education

The Cat's Meow Veterinary Hospital acquired an ultrasound unit in 2005, and Dr. Bean and Dr. Susan traveled to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston for an abdominal and cardiac ultrasound course.  Dr. Susan also completed an introductory course at Western Veterinary Conference in February 2003.  Because the learning curve for ultrasound is so long, we will concentrate on the abdomen initially and then advance to the heart.  We will be using our capabilities to the best of our abilities, meaning that we may still need to involve an ultrasound specialist to help with a diagnosis, just as human doctors may refer to a specialist.  We hope to increase our diagnostic capabilities so we can better help our patients by incorporating this useful tool.  Every piece of equipment purchased and every course taken has your babies, our patients, as our focus.  We continually strive to practice the most current medicine and surgery we can to help your cat live a long and healthy life.

All of our doctors complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education each year, including hands on labs as well as lectures and classes taken online or in journals.  Some of the conferences include the Western Veterinary Conference, South West Veterinary Symposium, Annual Feline Medicine & Surgery Conference at Texas A&M, TVMA courses, Veterinary Information Network (VIN) courses, Tarrant County Veterinary Medical Association (TCVMA) courses, and individual courses provided by various doctors and organizations.  We work very hard at being the best and bringing you the latest cutting edge treatments and diagnostics.

Rachel, our surgical technician, is our primary anesthesiologist and dental hygienist.  It is her job to help the doctor induce and maintain a proper plane of anesthesia, watch for any potential complications, and wake the patient up after the procedure.  She has studied types of anesthetics and pain medications as well as their protocols (combinations thereof, quantity, strength, route of administration, length of effect, type of effect, etc.).  Her interest in oral health stemmed from previous employment with a human dentist and a human oral surgeon.  She has read numerous books and journal articles as well as staying current with technician websites.  The following certificates of achievement were from on-line courses she has completed.

CE for Clients

Glenda (previous receptionist) and Dr. Susan discussed oral health care for cats at the Fort Worth Zoo's Pet Fete: A Wild Celebration of Pets in November 2006.  Dr. Susan gave a presentation about reasons for feline oral health care, and they both talked one-on-one to people and described products available.
