Cats love to be outside; however, the outside sometimes doesn't love your cat. There are dangers everywhere. Your kitty could get lost, he or she could encounter dangerous wildlife, or your cat could stumble across a toxin or poison. That being said, it is often difficult to confine a cat that is enamored with life outside - especially if they once used to roam free.
Fortunately there is a compromise if you have the space and money. The answer is a Catio! Several of our clients have installed Catios at their home and their cats love spending time outside in their enclosed area. They can feel the wind, listen to the birds, and relax in their favorite sunbeam with grass under their foot pads. Purrr.
Recently we found out about Cat Topia - a company in Colorado that specializes in building cat enclosures. Their website has lots of fun ideas and practical applications. It is a good place to start if you are interested in pursuing this type of environmental enrichment for your fur baby.
