Pet Safety at Halloween

For kitties, Halloween should be a time to be aware of pet safety. In order to ensure your fur babies enjoy a fun and safe holiday, please remember the following tips:

Provide a safe place

  • Cats can easily become anxious and frightened when the doorbell is constantly ringing. Confining your kitty to a safe haven for the evening (like a pet carrier or a closed room) can help calm nerves and keep your kitty from running out of the constantly opening front door. The same holds true if you are having a party - find a safe spot, or room, for your cat during the festivities.

Keep your kitty indoors

  • Unfortunately, not all Halloween activities are positive, and cats are especially associated with superstition. Don’t take any chances and keep kitty safe at home.

Most cats don't like wearing costumes

  • There are, of course, exceptions, and yes, cats in costumes are extremely cute. Just make sure you’re reading your cat’s body language. If your cat is hissing, running or hiding when you try and put the cape on, then he or she is not interested in dressing up.
  • If you do elect to dress your cat for Halloween, use safe, non-flammable and non-toxic items that your cat is comfortable in and that don't restrict movement, breathing or vision.

Keep your cat away from candles

  • A traditional decoration for the evening is candles (either in a pumpkin or on a table). A panicked cat can tip over these candles with potentially devastating consequences. Make sure there is no way your cat can tip a candle and start a fire or harm themselves.

Hide your candy

  • Most human candy is either bad, or worse, toxic, to your kitty. Play it safe and keep your stash away from your cat's tummy.
